How much can you trust the information you see? For instance, can you trust the tens of thousands of results that show up in an internet search to all be accurate and up to date? Does appearing at the top of search results mean the information is more reliable? Is information widely shared on social media trustworthy just because it has been spread so much? How should we evaluate and judge such information in practice? In this public forum, we will discuss access to accurate information about medicine and healthcare from the perspectives of the media, patients, corporations, and regulator. Part I will focus on the media’s point of view, tackling themes such as “Why is there so much misinformation about healthcare and medicine?” and “What can individual citizens do to access accurate information?” Part II will focus specifically on “Access to accurate information about medicines.” We will share various perspectives on the challenges and efforts involved, and consider what is needed to create a society where citizens can more easily access accurate information.
