Complimentary - Research with ICD-10 Codes: What You Need to Know

Overview

This Solution Provider Webinar is brought to you by DIA in cooperation with
United BioSource Corporation

Duration Time:  1 hour 1 minute

U.S. health care providers are now required to use the ICD-10-CM version of the World Health Organization’s classification of diseases. The updated coding scheme offers more specific diagnoses and improved documentation, reflected in the substantial increase in the number (71%) and complexity of disease and procedure codes over ICD-9-CM.  The increased complexity has resulted in few 1:1 direct mappings of codes between the two versions (less than 5%), creating a significant analytic challenge for medical researchers using observational healthcare data. This webinar will educate the audience on the significant enhancements with ICD-10, providing practical solutions for researchers to consider for integrating ICD-10 codes into their cohort and outcome definitions using real-life examples.

  • Health outcomes
  • Drug utilization
  • Epidemiologists
  • Safety surveillance researchers
  • Health outcomes analysts
  • Health economists
  • Health plans or other health care organizations that access real world data
  • Market analysts and any other function within pharmaceutical settings

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this archived webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Identify areas of increased specificity that ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes provide compared with ICD-9
  • Evaluate  the impact that expanded ICD-10  codes may have on the study design of their  specific research projects
  • Recognize the importance of proper integration of ICD-9 and ICD-10  for study definitions
  • Describe available mapping tools and on-line resources to assist researchers in conducting studies with observational data contain both ICD-9 and ICd-10 codes
