The promise and sustainability of our rapidly aging society’s good health and longevity relies on successful elderly care. The key issues to achieve this end include proper allocation of medical and nursing care resources, focusing on quality of life, and consolidating the infrastructure of support functions. Evidence provided by epidemiological research on the elderly is expected to facilitate clinical development that meets the special needs of this age group, and rationalize allocation of resources to meet them.
