Addressing The Global Clinical Research Workforce

Overview

This event is a complementary On-Demand pre-event promotional webinar associated with the DIA 2023 Global Annual Meetingand open to the public.

This webinar will examine how to ‘turn barriers into bridges’ to build a diverse and research-ready clinical research workforce, including improving awareness of this career path and rethinking the demand for experience even at entry level.

The clinical research industry requires a diverse, research-ready workforce that does not currently exist. Today’s clinical trial workforce is not keeping up with the current workload, posing a threat to delivering innovative treatments to patients.

This webinar will explore the workforce shortage in clinical research, its root causes, and ways to “turn barriers into bridges.” Following up on a forum convened by the Association for Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), and a related White Paper (https://acrpnet.org/barriers-to-bridges-addressing-the-urgent-need-for-a-d), the session will present multiple viewpoints on this complex issue. In the view of several industry leaders, this issue is a self-inflicted wound resulting from two key challenges: first, a lack of awareness of clinical research as a profession, even after the publicity it gained duringCOVID-19 vaccine development; and second, the default requirement for a minimum length of experience – very often two years – in entry-level job descriptions. Together, these issues mean that even if efforts are made to raise awareness of theprofession and the multiple career paths it offers, many of interested candidates will fall at the first hurdle.

  • Key barriers and critical ideas for change
  • The imperative for workforce diversification to support sustainability, quality, and reliability in clinical research
  • The need for industry leaders to work together to address the lack of awareness of the clinical research profession, and the demand for multi-year experience for entry-level posts
  • The fact that the clinical research enterprise needs a clear framework with definitions of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to carry out safe, ethical, and high-quality research

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
  • Understand the major barriers standing between today’s clinical research workforce and future needs for diversity and research-readiness
  • Discuss how to build a thriving and vibrant workforce to meet current and future needs
  • Identify ways for stakeholders to work together to drive a more insight-driven, modern and enlightened approach to hiring and retaining people within clinical research
