The 2 Ethics Webinars in this series are designed to open up and address the ethics questions that arise in the context of clinical research in conflict situations, particularly in the situation of war in Ukraine. Most of the international guidelines we follow today have been developed against a background of ‘human experimentation’ in war situations or related to war situations (e.g., German, Japanese, UK experimentations during WWII, US 1950’s and 1960’s radiation experiments) as well experiments that were clearly unethical (e.g., Tuskegee). Thus, most of our fundamental guidances (Nuremburg, Helsinki, Belmont, CIOMS, and many of those built on these guidances) respond to protecting research participants from unethical research. The war in Ukraine presents an entirely different situation and thus a different background for the understanding clinical research during the war and indeed clinical research generally. The importance of this enterprise to patients, to medicine, to public health, to science, and to the economy of a nation needs to be appreciated. It is imperative that we revisit the questions of ethics with regard to research that has demonstrated an essential value for these societies.

This Webinar will be one hour in length followed by 30 minutes of member discussion where we welcome our attendees to turn on their camera, unmute their microphones, and share their thoughts/ask questions. We hope you can join the conversation about this important topic.
