Barbara Lopez Kunz
Global Chief Executive
Barbara Lopez Kunz, MS, is responsible for the leadership and oversight of DIA global operations, implementing strategies that focus on driving thought leadership and innovation in therapeutic development to improve the health of people worldwide. Ms. Lopez Kunz previously served as President of Health and Life Sciences at Battelle, one of the world’s largest, most respected research and development organizations. She has also served as Senior Vice President/General Manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Biosciences Business and on the inaugural board of the Childhood League School. She holds 14 patents, earned her Masters Degree in Polymer Science from the University of Akron, and is certified in INSEAD’s International Executive program.
Joy Whitlow, CPA, CGMA serves as Chief Financial Officer, responsible for overseeing DIA's global finance operations and strategy. She was previously CFO at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and the National Association of Broadcasters, where she oversaw finance, facilities, human resources, information technology, and membership for the $70 million organization. She also served as Controller at WETA (Channel 26 and 90.9 FM). She earned a BA degree in International Relations from Brown University and an MA degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She was recognized in 2012 by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation and in 2019 as a Top Nonprofit CFO by DCA Live.
Bill Allman is Chief Digital Officer (CDO), developing and implementing DIA’s digital strategy to create digital products/services that enhance DIA’s global impact. Previously the CDO of Smithsonian Enterprises, Mr. Allman has been cited as one of the "100 most innovative CDOs globally”. He was also VP of Digital Media for Bonnier Corp, Chief Content/Creative Officer for HealthCentral.com, SVP & GM of Interactive Media for Discovery.com, and founding GM for US News & World Report. Mr. Allman began his career as a journalist, helping create Science 80, an award-winning publication of the AAAS. He has written three books on evolution, brain science, and the science of sports, and has a BA in English and a BS in Biology from Brown University.
Timothy Hess serves as Global Director of IT, responsible for DIA’s global IT operations, computer infrastructure, customer and membership management databases, and website. He previously served as Director of Business Technology for Thomas Publishing Company LLC, where he managed all internal business systems, production systems, and technology projects; and as Vice President &Chief Technology Officer for Content Data Solutions, Inc., and as R&D Director for Reed Technology & Information Services. A proven technology thought leader with extensive experience in delivering high-performance systems that solve complex business problems in all development environments, Mr. Hess earned his computer science degree from Arcadia University.
Senior Vice President & Managing Director, DIA EMEA
Thomas Bols serves as Senior Vice President and Managing Director for DIA Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). He previously served in corporate international public affairs and as consultant for Amgen, Merck KGaA, and Biogen, working across market access, government affairs, public affairs, health policy, corporate communications, and patient advocacy to bring medicines to patients. Mr. Bols has held board positions for Europabio, the European Confederation of Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs, and other associations, and chaired various regulatory and access working groups within the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations. Mr. Bols earned his post-graduate degree in European Law from the University of Amsterdam.
Senior Vice President & Managing Director, DIA Japan
Hajime “Jim” Saijo, PhD, MBA, is the Sr. VP, managing director of DIA Japan. He previously established and lead the Academia Clinical Research Division, CMIC K.K., as Corporate Officer managing clinical research and investigator sponsored clinical trials. Dr. Saijo’s experience also includes serving as Director of R&D for Alcon Japan; Director of R&D and Representative Director for start-up operations of Ferring Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd.; and as VP of Medical, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs for Japan & APEC for OvaScience. Dr. Saijo earned his PhD in Medical Science from Tokyo Medical and Dental University Graduate School of Medicine and Dentistry, and his MBA in Business Administration from Temple University Business School, Japan Campus.
Senior Vice President & Managing Director, DIA China
Tong-Yan brings 20+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with a track record of business leadership and development, engagement with stakeholders across industry and government, and volunteer leadership experience in non-profit associations. She joins DIA after spending 4 years as the CEO of Sanpower Group to build up its healthcare business. Before Sanpower, she worked in Xi’an Janssen in various roles under General Med, Specialty Rx, and Market Access & Government Affairs. Tong-Yan started her career as a professor at Xian Medical University after receiving her Bachelor of Medical Science degree. She earned her MBA from Xian Jiao Tong University and her PhD in Management from ISCTE in Lisbon, Portugal.
