Objectives

Investigate the status of professional identity and social support of pharmaceutical staffs in Shaanxi province and analyze the relationship.

Method

Using stratified random cluster sampling, 418 pharmaceutical staffs from 24 public hospitals were recruited. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 2016. Hierarchical regression analysis and quantile regression were used to explore the association between professional identity and social support.

Results

The average overall scores of professional identity and social support were 3.90 ± 0.56 and 3.26 ± 0.49 using Likert 5 Point scoring method, respectively. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that organizational support and resident support were predictors of professional identification among pharmaceutical staffs (P <0.05). The R2 increased from 0.040 to 0.348 after bringing all dimensions of social support to the model. Quantile regression showed that the scores of professional identity among pharmaceutical staff were higher in those who had a high scores of team support, organizational support and resident support at percentiles of q=0.70-0.90, q=0.30-0.80 and q=0-0.90, respectively. The difference was significant. As the increase of the percentiles of professional identity, the scores of professional identity increase declined gradually among the three dimensions of social support.

Conclusion

The professional identification are at average level and the social support are at low level among pharmaceutical staffs in Shaanxi province. Social support is a significant influencing factor for professional identity. Influence of team support on professional identity was mainly concentrated on the higher percentiles, effect of organizational support on professional identity was focused on the middle and high percentiles, and the influence of resident support was concentrated on all percentiles. Quantile regression provided more information and robust results than hierarchical regression. Meanwhile, quantile regression applied for analysing professional identity has higher value for health work. Social support for pharmaceutical personnel should be strengthened through improving salary, creating more opportunities for additional training, improving the social status and perfecting the relationship between pharmaceutical staffs and patients, so as to strengthen professional identity and ensure the stability and working enthusiasm of pharmaceutical staffs.
