Clinical trials are used to evaluate investigational therapies and interventions and ideally, to bring effective, safe therapies that can be used in patient care as quickly as possible. However, clinical trials are often slow to conduct, costly, have a high failure rate, or test therapies in settings not representative of routine patient care. Innovation in trial design and conduct is necessary to be more efficient in evaluating potential therapies, yet still have the scientific rigor necessary for regulatory approval and acceptance in practice. Clinical trial innovation is multi-faceted and may involve innovation in trial design, adaptive and platform trials, statistical methods, selection of endpoints and approaches to endpoint modeling, as well as trial conduct and reporting. The keynote will discuss the motivation for continued innovation in clinical trials, describe recent innovations and their impact on clinical trials and highlight active areas of research among clinical trial professionals.

Learning Objective : At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

Identify the motivation for and discuss emerging innovations in clinical trials

Recognize the need for innovative trial designs in specific settings

Discuss the future for clinical trial innovation
