Healthcare Priorities: What Additional Funding Choices Should Decision-Makers Take Based on COVID-19 Impact on CNS Disorders?

Though the COVID-19 pandemic affects most aspects of human activity, its effect on population mental health is increasingly identified as a major concern and challenge for societies and health care systems. SARS-Cov-2 infection can cause direct CNS effects either by viral neurotropic invasion of the nervous system or from systemic disease and inflammatory response. However, the indirect mental health effects of the pandemic, driven by measures to mitigate transmission such as social distancing, quarantine, travel restrictions and closures of schools and businesses, may be even greater. This session will describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and how health care systems and practitioners are responding to these challenges. We will discuss specifically the role of funding mechanisms for mental health services, and how these may need to adapt to the pandemic situation to ensure continuity of care.
