Lead Patient Representative, Co-Principal Investigator, iConquerMS PPRN, PCORnet, United States

As the healthcare landscape shifts and changes, one thing remains constant – the need for information. Patient groups are increasingly important partners for the pharmaceutical industry. Although our patient community and pharmaceutical industry priorities may be seeking synergistic outcomes, the methods to arrive at these outcomes can often diverge. We share a common goal to help patients, caregivers, and providers understand and manage their disease/condition, including having timely and equitable access to the treatment they need. Patient groups provide the company with an insight on how to support healthcare professionals who in turn support patients. The medical affairs functional area of the industry is often able to contribute a range of skills, scientific and medical expertise, and knowledge which might support these patient advocacy efforts.

This session will shed light on best practices highlighting successful collaborations between patient groups and the medical affairs organizations within the industry.

Learning Objective : Identify the patient advocacy role in the drug development process; Discuss examples of successful collaborations between patient advocacy groups and medical affairs organizations across the industry; Evaluate ways to foster trust and mutual understanding needed to accomplish successful collaborative efforts between empowered patients.
