Narrative Medicine: How to Tap into the Inherent Power of Words and Stories in the Clinical Trial Process

Narrative medicine helps doctors, nurses, social workers, and therapists improve the effectiveness of care by developing the capacity for attention, reflection, representation, and affiliation with patients and colleagues. This workshop will introduce the concept of narrative medicine and the skills and habits of reflective writing and listening to better recognize, receive, absorb, interpret, and honor stories of illness towards the goal of achieving narrative competence.
**Due to workshop format, seating will be limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.
The San Diego Convention Center has stringent regulations on maximum room capacities, and they are strictly enforced. Once all seats are occupied, DIA will be required to close the workshop, and no more participants will be admitted. Interested attendees are encouraged to arrive at workshops early in order to ensure seating. Please note, as a workshop with interactivity, this offering will not be recorded.
Learning Objective : Define narrative medicine; Explain how narrative competence is applied to nourish empathic health care professional-to-patient relationships; Apply the skills of close reading and reflective writing in a small group setting.
