Objectives
The purpose of this work was to create a new patient centricity index validated against a scale of positive organizational outcomes, as part of the regular measurement of overall organizational health.
Method
Literature review and expert input informed item development and validation. Potential new items and existing items were assessed through correlation with externally validated criterion of organizational citizenship behavior. Linear regression model and Cronbach’s a were used to evaluate the index.
Results
A total of 4,545 responses were gathered from a survey that was administered to participants across different areas within the organization, representing geographical, specialty, function, and role diversity. Scores on new and existing survey items were evaluated against an externally validated index of positive organizational outcomes (organizational citizenship behavior scale). Final items were selected based on 1) the strength of the relationship with positive organizational citizenship behaviors (correlations ranging from r=0.20-0.30, p<0.05), 2) significantly predicted organizational citizenship behavior in linear regression model (regression coefficients: 0.01-0.15), 3) overall distribution of scores (mean range: 3.75-4.07, standard deviation range: .82-1.02), and 4) general alignment to the company’s definition of patient centricity. Based on this layered evaluation approach, a total of four new items were selected and combined with two existing organizational health survey items to create the new index. The six-item patient centricity index demonstrated strong scale reliability (Cronbach’s a = 0.78).
Conclusion
Though patient centricity has been associated with overall employee engagement, established measures of patient centricity appear lacking, limiting effective measurement and monitoring of a patient centric culture. We demonstrate the feasibility of creating and validating a novel patient centricity index to gauge progress in strengthening a patient centric culture at a global med-tech organization. Future work will expand on these findings by implementing the patient centricity index company-wide, assessing and measuring the index and item-level trends with a goal of driving business outcomes and strengthening patient centric culture.
