Objectives
The Global Compensation and Scope of Practice Study aims to provide comprehensive data on compensation and scope of practice for regulatory professionals in the healthcare products sector. It aims to offer insights into market value, job responsibilities, and the profession's evolution over time.
Method
Surveys were emailed to over 54,000 regulatory professionals; 1,961 responses were received. Submissions were assigned a confidential identification number. Data were checked manually and via a proprietary computer editing procedure. Five responses were required to show data for any given category.
Results
Key findings include:
1. Compensation Trends: The report highlights significant variations in compensation based on job titles, regions, and levels of experience. For instance, Vice Presidents/Senior Directors/Directors/Associate Directors have an average total compensation of $293,251, while Specialists/Associates/Coordinators earn $114,963 on average.
2. Educational Background: Regulatory professionals are highly educated, with nearly two-thirds holding postgraduate degrees, including 20% with doctorates. Common fields of study include life/natural sciences, clinical science, engineering, and regulatory affairs.
3. Experience: The typical respondent has approximately 17 years of professional experience, with 9 years in regulatory roles. Many professionals transitioned from fields like quality assurance, research and development, and engineering.
4. Scope of Practice: Regulatory professionals are involved in various functions, with the most common being regulatory strategy, submission (registration/review), project management, compliance, and regulatory information management. They primarily work with medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics.
5. Work Environment: Nearly half of the respondents reported a hybrid work situation, while 37% work remotely. Only 20% work in person all the time.
6. Value and Recognition: Two-thirds of respondents believe that senior management is aware of their regulatory work, and most feel that their work is valued. There has been a slight decline in perceived importance from 2022.
7. Career Motivations: Key factors influencing career decisions include opportunities for career advancement, diverse work, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of healthcare products, and job security.
8. Professional Development: Respondents expressed a need for professional development resources not currently offered by their employers, such as attendance at external education programs, certification fees, and membership in profess
