Objectives

To explore innovative strategies for reducing the environmental impact of clinical trials while enhancing their accessibility and equity in vulnerable populations.

Method

Combining insights from implemented practices like energy-efficient labs and waste reduction with projections for emerging initiatives, this poster estimates potential environmental and cost savings from innovative approaches such as optimized shipping and sustainable infrastructure investments.

Results

Early results from implemented initiatives show significant reductions in energy consumption, waste production, and the carbon footprint of packaging materials. These efforts include increasing the percentage of electricity sourced from onsite and purchased renewable energy at three accessioning locations. A sustainable packaging initiative has also improved thermal stability in shipping while cutting the CO2 footprint of materials by 75-80%. Based on modeled data from the manufacturer’s life cycle assessment and current usage levels, once fully deployed, this initiative will achieve a reduction equivalent to removing 300,000 automobiles from the road annually. Modeled findings from the organization’s sustainability program, project additional environmental and cost savings from other initiatives in development. One such initiative includes leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable shipping lane optimization. Another uses AI tools to provide rapid onsite support to clinic personnel for sample handling questions, greatly reducing shipping errors, loss and waste. Collectively, these efforts underscore the potential of clinical trials to minimize their environmental impact while enhancing accessibility and equity. Further, partnerships with climate-resilient labs and clinics in vulnerable regions ensure they are equipped to withstand extreme weather events (e.g., hurricanes, floods, heatwaves). A decentralized network of testing and logistics options strengthens the continuity of trials and guarantees equitable healthcare access, even during climate crises.
