In rare/intractable disease research, “the Plan for Promotion of Medical R&D” prescribed by the Japanese government promotes various approaches toward development of drugs, treatment, and disease prevention, including construction of a comprehensive medical system for diagnosing patients with rare/undiagnosed diseases (the Initiative on Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases: IRUD), research using disease-specific iPS cells, AMED’s cooperation with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC), etc. In this session, experts will provide a brief introduction to the current status and approaches of rare/intractable diseases research in Japan, and discuss issues to be addressed and future perspectives in rare/intractable disease research, drug discovery, and development.
