Objectives

The objective of this study is to evaluate the current pharmaceutical industry utilization of patient, caregiver, and healthcare professional medical engagement content and tools to support quality improvement as well as the optimization of medical information to meet the needs of the customer.

Method

An anonymous 15 question survey was distributed to 27 pharmaceutical medical information departments to assess how pharmaceutical companies are engaging with healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. An evaluation of current pharmaceutical web-based portals was also conducted.

Results

This study received a 74% survey response rate (n = 20). The results demonstrate disparities in the availability of medical content for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals across the pharmaceutical industry. Healthcare professional web-based portals most commonly offer medical information letters, congress materials, infographics, disease state education, and pipeline information. Few companies have web-based portals available for patients and caregivers. Web-based portals for patients and caregivers may contain disease state education, plain language summaries of clinical trials, infographics, and product prescribing information.

Conclusion

The results of this study indicate a variation in the medical materials available to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals in response to unsolicited requests. The type of content and technological features offered also vary among companies. The development of a web-based portal for patients is an area of future growth for many pharmaceutical companies.
